Gig poster – Gut Fauna

Gig poster – Gut Fauna – 2up
Gig poster. Original doodle version (left), type version (right)

I did a set of gig posters, each based on a phone doodle. Then I did a version of each without the doodle with more emphasis on the type. Both versions shown above.

How did I get to version 2?

  • Same colours.
  • Used doodle as basis for typeface.

The link between the two posters here is clearer than many of the others I’ve done, although they are quite different in mood. It was obvious that I should attempt to create a typeface for poster two using the blocks of the doodle from poster one.

Slicing the letters into 5 horizontal strips (2 blank, except for ‘5’ to differentiate it from ‘S’) and fixing their width did make it relatively quick and easy to do. But I’ve lost the layering, complexity and ambiguity of the doodle altogether (see also this poster).

I like the end result but I can see a way of staying truer to the original*. The doodle almost looks like it has text hidden in there already and it should be possible to tease it out.

* Update

Something like this: Gig poster – Gut Fauna – alt

Gig poster. Alternative 2nd version

This is too irregular, and probably too illegible, but it could take a very long time to get right. Or find out that it’s never going to match the vague idea in my head.
