Gig poster – Magic Orgy
I did a set of gig posters, each based on a phone doodle. Then I did a version of each without the doodle with more emphasis on the type. Both versions shown above.
How did I get to version 2?
- Kept the font and layout of the main act name.
- Added a colour effect to main act name.
- Kept the basic colour scheme.
- Used a more interesting font for the information.
Of course it should be ‘Magick Orgy’ for full occultic effect but that wouldn’t look as tidy.1
Obviously, I liked the layout and font of ‘Magic Orgy’. It has some character but it doesn’t pin it down to any style or era. Perhaps there’s a vague 70s vibe but that’s fine.
Psychedelia
Magic Orgy, the group, have a whiff of weed, tofu and damp about them and I was tempted to go full 60s psychedelic for the 2nd poster. This would probably have been pastiche so I decided to try and be psychedelic in a more subtle, less cliched way. Hence the colouring on the main lettering.
Chromatic aberration
The idea for the colouring comes from the fringes of colour (chromatic aberration) that occur around when you photograph something bright through a poor lens. It gives the lettering a slightly blurred, shifting quality, but no blur effects have been used.
The background has a subtle ‘zoom’ effect.
