Gig poster – Foliage
How did I get from 1 to 2?
- Centred (or thereabouts) the main type as it’s now the only focus point on the poster.
- The patchwork of shapes from the doodle is slightly reflected in the colouring of the main lettering, although the colouring is very different (I used a photo).
Made the background dark so the colouring on the lettering looks brighter.
The lettering could be seen as being cut out of the brown ‘foreground’ giving a glimpse of something underneath. (This is more or less how the main text was created). I was thinking of foliage partially obscuring something and this makes a reference to that idea.
Why not use images of leaves? The literal illustration of a performer’s name on its artwork rarely happens. (There are probably loads. That will give you something to think about. I can only think of this).
Illustrating an idea without adding to something else isn’t usually good design. Most group names don’t have any use or influence beyond identifying the group2 Having said that, you often need ‘a way in’ to a design and you can do a lot of varied and interesting things with images of leaves. So, I probably could have used leaves. But it would have felt a bit cheesy and obvious.
