Drawing an alphabet – Q
Personal project.

A sans-serif ‘Q’
Initial idea: squarish sans-serif
The ‘p’ was a standard sort of serif and I thought I should include a standard sort of sans-serif too.
I started off with a squarish circle. I tried to be clever by making it irregular but not wonky. But I couldn’t manage the ‘not wonky’. It’s still slightly asymmetrical on both horizontal and vertical axes. I don’t know if that helps.
Most sans-serif ‘Q’s are basically ‘O’s with a perfunctory looking stick attached. I had a look at a few serifs,1 which tend to have more interesting tails, and nicked this idea because it was one of the more unusual ones.
This is part of a project to draw the letters of the alphabet in different styles.
- This sort of ‘Q’ is found in a type of font called ‘Grotesque Slab’ which originated in the mid-19th century. ‘Clarendon’ is a good example.
