Drawing an alphabet – ‘E’

Personal project.
Letter E
A 3D ‘E’

Initial idea: 3D

This has definitely been done before. It’s such an obvious idea. My first plan was to leave out the vertical part of the letter so it was 3 overlapping diamond shapes. This didn’t look much like an ‘E’ though it might have served as a more abstract logo.

Popping a letter into three dimensions is a common logo treatment.

Negative space

‘Negative space’ is used to describe the part of the design that isn’t inked. Here the ‘E’ shape only exists as negative space. It is suggested but isn’t actually drawn.

Devil in the details

The black upper surface of the top ‘shelf’ of the ‘E’ is larger than that of the lower two. If it was the same size, the upright part of the ‘E’ wouldn’t exist. But it would make for a tidier logo. There wouldn’t be that small ‘overhang’ (see left corner of the top ‘diamond’) and all 3 ‘diamonds’ would, neatly, be the same size.

This is part of a project to draw the letters of the alphabet in different styles.

Bonus feature

Letters into logos

It wasn’t the original intent but the potential was obviously there – I’ve turned some of the letters into logos and branding. I’ve had to invent companies to match the logos, which is not the usual order of things.
